The Pony Show In Roundstone
July is a busy month in Roundstone; with the Pony Show on the 12th , The Ballyconneely Show the following week-end, the Regatta from the 24th to 26th , Traditional Music Nights every Wednesday and the Farmer’s Market every Sunday the village really comes to life as summer (hopefully) gets under way.
The Roundstone Pony and Dog Show on the 12th of July is popular with both locals and visitors. The first official Connemara Pony Show was held in Roundstone in 1924 and the village was one of the many host sites during the following years until the show settled in Clifden. The Roundstone show has now been revived and takes place every July at the beautiful showground overlooking the bay.
The following week-end, 18th & 19th July, the annual Pony Show takes place in the neighbouring village of Ballyconneely, with pony jumping competitions on Saturday and the official show on Sunday.
It’s not just the shows that make Roundstone the perfect location for visitors who enjoy pony and horse riding. A number of excellent riding centres are located within a short drive of the village and the various treks they offer are an ideal way to explore the beautiful landscape of the region.
Traditional Irish music is another of the attractions of Connemara and Roundstone Community Centre will be hosting an Irish Night every Wednesday during July & August, featuring a great selection of local musicians and dancers. Music enthusiasts of all ages are welcome, as is audience participation!
We will also have music here at Eldons during the summer. Local musicians Fiachra & Sophie have started playing the uileann pipes and fiddle in our bar every Friday night, and their lively session music has proved to be a hit with all our customers.
The Roundstone Farmers’ Market will be held weekly during the summer months and is a perfect opportunity to meet the locals and sample the wonderful produce of the region, From homemade ice-cream to natural beauty products. The market takes place every Sunday from 12-4pm beside the village playground.
The main event of the summer is the Regatta, which takes please at the end of July every year. Dating back to the 1890’s, Roundstone Regatta showcases the traditional vessels of the west coast, the Galway Hooker and the Currach, with races held for various classes of boat. This year’s Regatta will run from Friday 24th to Sunday 26th July. Whether you are participating or just enjoying the spectacle, Regatta week-end in Roundstone is not to be missed!
